Huomenna maalissa - Finish Line of Tomorrow

Finish Line of Tomorrow is a film performance. The piece is shot on 35mm film on a DIY slit-scan camera a.k.a. “finish line camera”. This experimental documentary film is performed via self made projector. Ending result is somewhere in between the photography and early cinema. Performance was premiered at Sola -festival of audiovisual in Helsinki 31st of October.

The main idea for the artwork was curiosity to take a cinematic approach to slit-scan footage which has a long tradition in history of film and photography. In a nuttshel, the camera, when positioned immobile, is only able to render things that move by the camera. All the immobile objects will remain non-visible, unless the camera itself  is moving/panning. This framework paved out the two year long artistic practise to develop expression with this weird medium. One of most interesting part for this artistic process was itstwisted relationship to time and direction of movement.

Right after the intial tests of the DIY camera in 2024 the theme of the film became obvious. The film in making was about the immediate now and this mystical flow of people, cars, bikes, etc as they were heading determinedly to somewhere. The question is, where are we all going?
